With the distribution of the internet, online games were created. At the beginning, it was mostly text adventures or small board game simulations. With the further development of the browsers and the corresponding plug-ins like java, flash and shockwave, also the development of graphically more complex online games were possible.

What are the characteristics of an online game?
An online game is loaded over the internet and is processed over the user's browser. That's why online games are often called browser games. Here you have to distinguish between two main categories: the multiplayer games and the single player games. The multiplayer games are generally played against real opponents, there's a permanent data transfer over the server. The single player games are played alone or against a simulated computer opponent. After the game is loaded no more data transfer takes place. Generally, online games are for free and it's not necessary to install additional software on the own computer.

Only a little game for betweentimes?
Often people smile at online games since they can't keep up with the complex 3-dimensional graphic of (bought) computer games. But this is not the whole purpose of an online game. It's not always necessary to be a perfectly engineered 3-dimensional world, to enjoy playing. Also little games can fascinate. Meanwhile, there exist about some ten thousands online games and new games are released every day. A little game for betweentimes? Yes, certainly too - but especially here you can find some games for which a little break won't be enough ...
